Quinta de Saramaga

A modern renovation

Preparation and Demolition

In this initial phase, the focus is on assessing the current condition of the land and any existing structure, followed by the definition of the new architectural project. Based on this, the site is cleared and necessary demolitions are carried out to begin construction in a safe and organized manner.

Construction and Structure

With the land prepared, the structural phase of the renovation begins. The foundation, walls, and roof are (re)built, followed by the installation of essential systems such as electricity, plumbing, windows, and doors, giving the bungalow its new shape.

Finishes and decoration

In the final stage, finishing touches are added: painting, flooring, and furniture installation. Decoration and landscaping complete the process, transforming the space into a comfortable, modern, and functional home

Quinta de Saramaga

In 2021 we bought Quinta de Saramaga in Enxames, Central Portugal. The land of 1.2 hectare & the house were completely overgrown with brambles and nobody lived in the house for 20+ years.

The house is pre 1951 but nobody could tell us when it was exactly built. The 90 year old lady who sold us the house, hadn’t lived in it for 40 years. But originally, her family lived in the oldest of the 3 parts of the house on the first floor. As usual in this region, the ground floor was for their animals/live stock. Later a second part was built to the house and the upstairs of that section housed the very first school of this area.

Later an annex was being constructed but not completed and outside they build a wood oven and a pig shed. In the wood oven they did not only bake bread for most of their neighbors but also roast coffee beans for the whole region. Water was supplied by 1 well and 1 water mine.

Although the exterior walls of > 1 m tick were solid, several sections of the 1st floor were in bad condition and the roof was largely collapsed. Working with a local contractor, we started with the demolition of everything that was in bad or poor condition. This resulted in only having parts of the 4 exterior walls remaining and 1 interior wall. Everything else has been rebuilt.

After 3 years of continuous work by me & my son plus the help of a contractor, we managed to completely restore the quinta. We added an outdoor space with terrace, pizza oven and pool.

It has been a huge project but we are we proud to have been able to rescue this beautiful house.
